Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Motorbike Run

Today is the annual Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Motorbike Run to Harwich. I’m lucky enough to live in the middle of this fantastic event that raises money for an excellent cause. Without our air ambulances many people would not be with us today.

The event sets off from Ford Motor Co’s site in Dunton, Essex and makes its way to Harwich. As the morning and early afternoon gathers pace the side streets start to see an enormous influx of motorcycles of all shapes, styles, sizes and power!

The Quayside at Harwich becomes a bustling place to be and it’s great day for everyone. The main event is held on St Helens Green with plenty of stalls and places to get a bite to eat. Theres a music stage too.

I went out early before there was many people about and there were plenty of stewards and volunteers all busy doing their bit.

Here they come!

Just as you get used to the quiet…boom…thousands of bikes appear, revving their engines and making their way into town. The magnificent procession along the quayside fills the air with the smell of exhaust and the side streets start to fill up.

The atmosphere is fantastic and really friendly with a healthy mixture of visitors and guys and girls in their leathers. If you’re a bike enthusiast then this is must see event. There are plenty of machines to wow you and wet your appetite. Some large, some small, some with three wheels but most with two.

On the green

The turn out has been impressive. I’m writing this blog as I’m popping in and out to see the action. There’s throngs of people making their way from the quayside to the green, and there’s a sea of bikes outside Government House which is a sight to behold. On the green itself the band is in full swing and the queues for food and icecreams are snaking their way through the crowds.

There’s plenty so see. If you’re in the market for a new bike then there’s some lovely machines for sale too.

The air ambulance team have one of their helicopters on the beach and you can have your picture taken with them but there’s a bit of a queue.

Today has been excellent. I’ve been in Harwich for three years and this my first time at the bike run. I was determined to see it this year and I’m so glad I did. It really is worth it and the organisation has been superb. The air ambulance service is so important and events like this raise it’s profile and raise some much needed funds. It’s good for Harwich too and I’m pleased the event is held here.

I’ll be putting this as a firm fixture in my diary from now on.

Well done to the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance team and well done to Harwich too.
